With so many more couples choosing to start married life off with an adventure, visiting a totally different country, and deciding on combining their Wedding or Elopement with their honeymoon, let’s look at some of the questions couples often have asked, and some of their pain points when it comes to organising and planning this hugely important event, which will take place, so very far from home.
As a bilingual Celebrant based in Germany, and working in predominantly the German speaking parts of Europe, in Switzerland, Austria, Tyrol, and the Dolomites, as well as some of the French and Italian parts, it has been so rewarding to be able to help my couples with my knowledge and understanding of language, culture, wedding traditions and of course, create a memorable and meaningful ceremony.
Many couples ask first of all about the legalities, and whilst it is possible to marry legally in many European countries, this comes with a big caveat – each country will have different legal requirements for residency, notarised documents, translations and costs of these and the place where the registration of marriage will take place. It has often been the case that couples traveling from their home countries have filed their marriages quietly, locally, in the Town Hall or Court House, which allows them to share those moments with those who may not be able to travel with them to their chosen destination. A bit of a win-win and it doesnt have to break the budget.
And of course, it doesnt have to be in the same year, – many of my couples have had to register their marriage way ahead of their destination wedding or elopement for different reasons, : job and visa requirements, military requirements for housing, health or mobility needs of parents or grandparents, the list goes on. Each couple is different and I always counsel them to make the best choice for their circumstances.
Planning a destination wedding in Europe can be a beautiful adventure, but it often comes with the challenge of language barriers. While many vendors in popular areas speak excellent English, I’ve found that this isn’t always the case in more secluded spots, or more off the beaten track areas.
It’s crucial to think about how you’ll communicate your vision to local professionals, from florists to caterers, to hair and make up, and more! It is always good to work with a local wedding planner who speaks both the local language and English, and my own experience with @PeachperfectWed has been totally 5 star! They can help bridge any communication gaps, ensuring everything aligns with your dreams. I can help of course too – with my contacts, my experience in different areas, different venues and locations. This is part of my service to all my couples, not simply creating and delivering a ceremony, but helping them with customs, traditions, and the connections I have made over the years I have been a Celebrant.
It is always fun to learn a few key phrases in the local language; it’s a lovely way to show respect for the culture and can make interactions more enjoyable. From my experience with eloping couples, smooth communication can lead to a stress-free planning process and a truly memorable wedding day.
Budgeting for a destination wedding is both exciting and a little overwhelming, and I completely understand that! While it might seem like a wedding abroad will save you money, it’s essential to create a detailed budget that considers travel, accommodations, and local vendor costs.
I’ve seen couples underestimate expenses like flying guests to Europe or booking stunning venues in the Dolomites or French vineyards and forgetting things like car hire costs, toll roads, and motorway visas. Europe is a really wonderful place to travel from and within, by car or train or by air – but prices do hike during the peak seasons. Check out websites that focus on travel hacks, such as RometoRio, where you can find really helpful information and advice as well as costings.
To keep your budget in check, prioritise what matters most to you—whether it’s breathtaking scenery, the indulgence of a five star venue or the memories you will have captured forever by amazing photography/videography/drone shots. I recommend looking for local vendors who offer package deals and considering the off-peak season for better rates if you need to stretch your budget a bit more.
With careful planning, you can create a beautiful and memorable celebration while keeping financial stress at bay, because no one wants to begin their marriage with debt or money worries.
Choosing the right vendors is key to a successful destination wedding or elopement. I know that finding reliable professionals who truly understand your vision can feel daunting, especially when planning from afar.
I suggest starting by seeking recommendations from local wedding planners or browsing reviews specific to the region you’re considering, whether it’s the enchanting Castles in Germany or Austria, vineyards in France, or the stunning lakes and mountains of Switzerland, Northern Italy and the Dolomites.
Establishing clear communication is so important; don’t hesitate to schedule video calls to discuss your ideas and gauge their enthusiasm. Find out what their style is, how they work with their clients, how available they are, given time differentials this is important! I always offer my couples weekend calls because it just is more relaxing for them to have that choice!
In my experience, building a rapport with your vendors ensures they capture your ideas, your unique style and preferences, leading to a seamless and joyful wedding experience. We all want to give you the perfect day!
When planning your wedding, especially in beautiful elevated locations like the Dolomites or the Alps, quick changeable weather can definitely be a concern. Mountains have what I call a “micro climate” and whilst beautiful and stunning all year round, it’s wise to research typical weather patterns for your chosen date and location.
In mountainous areas, conditions can change quickly, so having a backup plan for outdoor ceremonies is essential. Many couples I’ve worked with have chosen venues that offer both indoor and outdoor options to safeguard against unexpected weather surprises. As their Celebrant, I am there for the day and so can offer complete flexibility – and often this means simply waiting 20 minutes or so for a quick shower to pass, or to use the indoor Plan B location! Venues are very aware of their seasons and the changes and will always give helpful support and advice.
Just a word about Elopements in Wild Areas. Mountain elopements can be dangerous in certain seasons, and experienced Elopement Photographers like MadeintheMountains and WildConnections are not only professional photo and filmmakers but also have guiding and orientation skills and certification, know their areas intimately, and really will make sure you are safe.
I also recommend providing guests with packing suggestions so they feel comfortable, no matter what the forecast holds. By preparing for different weather scenarios, you can focus on enjoying your special day without worrying about what Mother Nature might bring.
One of the most delightful aspects of planning a destination wedding is the chance to personalise your ceremony in a unique cultural setting. As a wedding Celebrant, I love seeing couples blend their traditions with local customs, creating a rich and meaningful experience.
Whether it’s incorporating German wedding rituals or adding elements like a Swiss Chocolate, or Italian wine ceremony, personalisation allows you to tell your love story in a way that truly resonates.
Think about your setting; for instance, a ceremony at the side of a glacial lake can beautifully showcase local flora and fauna. Sharing some personal anecdotes in your vows can also add depth and authenticity, and also lighten what can be a really emotional moment.
Adding music to the Ceremony brings even more meaning to what is a totally joyfilled moment, whether that’s a Bavarian accordionist, a single Scottish Piper, or a classic Violinist. By thoughtfully combining your style with the local culture, you’ll create a wedding that reflects your love and commitment, making it all the more special.
