Elopements and Weddings in the Alps
Your Ceremony in Austria, South Tyrol and the Dolomites with your Bilingual Celebrant
There is something about the Alps that changes everything.
The scale of the mountains. The stillness of the valleys. The feeling that you are somewhere ancient and enormous and completely alive. I have officiated ceremonies across this extraordinary region; in Salzburg, in the South Tyrolean valleys near Cortina and Merano, in the dramatic landscape of the Dolomites — and every single one has stayed with me.
This page is for couples who feel drawn to the beauty and splendour of pristine nature and the European Alps. Who want their ceremony to feel as big and as real as the landscape around them. Who are not interested in a generic wedding but who really want something they can put their absolute stamp on and say, “this is what we chose for ourselves”. Unique, visionary, adventurous but also mindful and intentional.
Who this page is for
Couples travelling from the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and beyond who are planning an elopement or intimate wedding somewhere in the European Alpine region. So whether that is the grandeur of Salzburg, the charm of Innsbruck, the vineyard-draped valleys of South Tyrol, or the jaw-dropping peaks of the Dolomites.
You may have a venue in mind. You may simply know you want the mountains and need some guidance and advice on locations and the best time of year.
I would love to help you find exactly the right setting and create a ceremony that serves you both as a marker of a wonderful milestone and a reminder of where you stood when you made those forever promises.
I offer ceremonies in English, in German, or in a combination of both, and can help when communicating with local vendors and suppliers – particularly useful across this trilingual region where English, German, and Italian are all spoken.
A region of extraordinary variety
Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg is one of Europe’s most romantic and recognisable cities, and the surrounding Austrian Alps make it an extraordinary setting for a ceremony with real drama and beauty.
Schloss Leopoldskron is one of the most iconic venues in the whole of Austria. A baroque palace set directly on its own lake, with the Untersberg mountain rising behind it. I have had the privilege of officiating here, and it is genuinely one of the most beautiful settings I have ever worked in. The mermaid gate leading to the lake, the reflections of the palace in the water, the mountains framing it makes it cinematic in the truest sense – plus it has it’s own iconic status as being featured in The Sound of Music.
For couples who have dreamed of a ceremony that feels both intimate and grand, Schloss Leopoldskron is extraordinary.
South Tyrol – the valley between Italy and Austria

The excitement when I come to this region just has me fizzing! South Tyrol sits in a world of its own. Technically part of Italy but deeply Austrian in character, this bilingual region offers exceptional dramatic mountain scenery, medieval villages, vineyard-covered hillsides, and add to that the warmth and hospitality of the people you meet, you will feel relaxed and welcomed.
The area around Merano is particularly special. Spa hotels nestled into the valley, stunning red apple orchards stretching up vertiginous hillsides, the peaks of the Alps rising all around. It is the kind of place that feels both deeply peaceful and quietly thrilling.
I was honoured to officiate one of my most moving ceremonies here. Tracy and Bron’s elopement at Quellenhof St. Martin, which I share below.
The Dolomites
The Dolomites are simply one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth. These pale, jagged peaks are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and rise from the valleys of northeastern Italy and straddle the borders of Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. Couples who choose the Dolomites for their elopement wedding are choosing one of the great natural wonders of the world as their backdrop.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Val Gardena, the high mountain passes — the Dolomites offer extraordinary locations for ceremonies both intimate and adventurous.
Two real ceremonies in the Alpine Region
Tracy and Bron – Quellenhof St. Martin, South Tyrol
Tracy and Bron’s elopement is one of those stories I will always tell, and I am delighted that I have their permission to share it.
They had prepared to travel from Canada with a very specific destination in mind. Tracy was planning to run the Berlin Marathon with her Running Club team mates, with her partner Bron supporting her – which would mean she’d claim her final Medal in the “Top 5” which are Chicago, Boston, London, New York and Berlin. When an injury forced Tracy to withdraw at the last minute, bringing frustration and disappointment, Bron turned the moment entirely on its head by asking his fiancee how she felt about going to Europe and getting married instead.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Tracy agreed, and they began their research, found Max and Lisa of Nomadic Hearts, a team that specialise in Elopements and Adventures in Germany, Bavaria, Austria and the Dolomites. After a brief consultation Tracy and Bron chose the amazing jaw dropping grandeur of the Dolomites.
With barely four weeks to plan, they based themselves near Merano at the beautiful Quellenhof St. Martin – a spa hotel located in a steep sided apple tree covered valley, with a view of the dramatic peaks of the South Tyrolean Alps. Their ceremony took place on a deck overlooking the spa pools, with fountains playing softly in the background and the soft September sunlight bathing everything in gold.
It was just the three of us on that floating deck. Tracy and Bron, and myself, with Max and Lisa capturing the magic of every personal emotional moment.
Their ceremony included a heartfelt hand tying, deeply personal vows, and a tender memorial moment honouring Bron’s parents, who had recently passed. I reflected their strength, resilience, respect, admiration and love for each other in my surprise ceremony script, finishing by reading messages from family and friends back home, bringing their loved ones into the moment even from thousands of miles away. Their smiles and joy were absolute – and standing in that bubble of love and happiness still gives me goosebumps.
Afterwards, they celebrated with a helicopter ride over the Dolomites and more of their images and story is on my Real Weddings and Elopements page.
Tracy and Bron’s elopement shows something I genuinely believe in – that the most meaningful ceremonies are not always the most planned. Sometimes the best thing that can happen is the plan falling away entirely and turning disappointment into something filled with joy.
Helen and Richard – Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg
Helen and Richard chose Schloss Leopoldskron for their wedding, and from the moment I arrived I understood why.
Standing at the mermaid gate with the lake before us and with the baroque facade of the Palace behind us was absolutely magical. It was one of those settings that makes you catch your breath, and when I realised that I was standing in the place Julie Andrews had stepped out of the lake to face a very displeased Captain Von Trapp – well how can one not begin humming the famous tune from The Sound of Music?
Salzburg was the perfect choice – with its romance, and elegance, and because it was the city where Richard asked Helen to marry him. They had travelled from their home in London, inviting family and guests from around the world to join them for a ceremony that felt worthy of the life they were stepping into together, and that is exactly what we created.
Their ceremony was warm, deeply personal, and filled with laughter and happy tears in equal measure. It remains one of the most beautiful days I have been privileged to be part of.
Two ways to celebrate in the Alps
A Ceremony I Lead in Person
This is for couples who want me fully present on the day, leading your ceremony, holding the space, and making sure every word lands exactly as it should.
I craft your ceremony entirely from scratch, weaving your love story, your values, and your vision of a future together into a script that contains your voice, and which is delivered with confidence, warmth and genuine joy.
Everything is included: unlimited drafts, vow writing support, meaningful rituals if you wish, bilingual delivery in English and German at no extra cost, travel and accommodation in the Alpine region, and a rehearsal or walkthrough the day before – as I will always make sure the day before and after your ceremony date is blocked out too, just in case plans change and you need flexiblity.
Ceremonies in the Alpine region from €1,900 all-inclusive.
Ceremonies in Austria, the South Tyrol and Dolomites regions are priced in Euros. Should you require the support of a full service planner, on the day co-ordinator, photo/video team or other professional suppliers I can share my recommendations with you during our consultation call.
The Self-Led Ceremony – for Couples who want the moment to be entirely theirs
Perhaps you are hiking to a mountain viewpoint at sunrise with just your photographer/videographer. Perhaps you want to exchange of your vows in complete privacy, in a place that belongs only to the two of you. Perhaps you want full flexibility to choose the moment and the place where you make your forever promises.
The self-led ceremony is for couples who want that intimacy, but with words that were crafted with real care, real knowledge of who you are, and real understanding of what this moment means.
Here is how it works:
Before your ceremony, I ask each of you to answer significant questions about your relationship, your hopes, your dreams, what loving this person has changed in you, and the vows you want to make. You answer separately, without sharing your responses with each other.
From your answers, I write a complete ceremony script. Each of you has a part to play, with gentle cues guiding you through each moment, when to speak, when to listen, when to simply look at each other.
I work with you individually and share your part of the ceremony with you – unless you want it to be a total surprise, – but on the day, you will hear your partner’s words for the very first time.
It is private, deeply personal, and in my experience one of the most tender and moving experiences a couple can have.
The Self-led Ceremony is available as a standalone package. Please get in touch to discuss.
What your Alpine Elopement might look like
You arrive a few days before if possible, to really get a feel for the area. It is truly special. The mountains are already doing something to you that particular stillness, that sense of scale that fills you with awe and wonder. You relax after a day’s hike, mountain biking, or perhaps strolling through apple orchards, taking in a wine tasting at a local vineyard. You have dinner somewhere warm and wonderful and you feel entirely ready.
On the morning, you might go on a sunrise hike with your photographer to capture the morning light, changing into your wedding outfits on a high alpine meadow where you exchange vows before taking a helicopter flight over the mountain terrain.
Perhaps you both go for a spa session or swim, go riding, play a round of tennis or golf, and then return to change into your wedding outfits in a comfortable suite in your Salzburg or Innsbruck hotel, and we hold an intimate wedding ceremony surrounded by your closest loved ones, followed by a sumptious dinner and dancing.
Your ceremony takes place. Just you, or you with those you trust to support and surround you with their love, the most stunning of landscapes and the memory of ponies wearing cowbells, jagged mountain peaks that were under the ocean aeons ago, and the magic of the words you will say to each other.
No schedule. No rush. Just making forever memories in one of the most extraordinary places on earth, at the beginning of everything.
Frequently Asked Questions about eloping in the Alps
Can couples from the USA, Canada or the UK marry legally in Austria or Italy?
Yes, but the legal requirements for foreign nationals can be complex, involving documentation, waiting periods, and registration at local civil offices. Most of my international couples choose to complete their legal marriage at home and then hold a personalised symbolic ceremony in the Alps. This gives complete freedom over your ceremony location and content with none of the administrative complexity.
Do you offer bilingual ceremonies in the Alpine region?
Yes. I am fully bilingual in English and German and can deliver your ceremony in English, in German, or in a combination of both. Across South Tyrol and Austria this is particularly valuable, as both English and German are widely spoken. Bilingual ceremonies are included at no extra cost.
The Dolomites span three countries – does that affect where you can work?
Not at all. I work across the whole Dolomites region regardless of which side of the border your ceremony falls on. If anything, the cross-border nature of the region adds to its magic and it belongs to the landscape, not to any particular nationality.
How far in advance should we get in touch?
As early as possible. I book only one ceremony per day, and often block the day before and after as you may need more flexibility particularly when choosing the more mountainous areas. Popular summer and early autumn dates in the Alps go quickly. For 2026 and 2027 bookings I would recommend getting in touch as soon as you have a location or date in mind.
Can you help us find a location if we are not sure where in the Alps to base ourselves?
Yes, happily. I know this region well and love helping couples find the right setting. Get in touch and we can talk through your vision together.
What if we want something very simple such as just vows and rings, outdoors?
That is absolutely possible and can be deeply beautiful. Some of my most moving ceremonies have been the simplest. Please get in touch and we can talk through exactly what feels right for you.
Let’s Create Something Beautiful in the Alps
I would love to hear about your plans and whether you have a venue booked, a location in mind, or simply a feeling of what you want to be surrounded by and would be on your top 5 magical moments to experience.
