My Favourite European Wedding Venues: A Celebrant’s Personal Journey Through Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy
Over the past several years, I’ve been so very fortunate, with fantastic couples choosing me as their Celebrant, for elopements and weddings in some of the most breathtaking venues!. I have created ceremonies in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, and more recently in Italy, where a long-held personal dream of mine is coming true.
Each place has a story to tell, not just in its architecture and setting, but in the moments shared there with couples who have trusted me implictly, and teams of so many talented professionals I just wanted to put this blog together in gratitude, as well as to provide inspiration to those looking for magic, adventure, and of course to be held in safe and knowledgeable hands!
These are some of my personal favourites: places where love, laughter and beauty came together perfectly and where lasting memories, friendships and connections were made.
1. Schloss Schadau, Thun, Switzerland
Nestled on the edge of Lake Thun with views across to the Bernese Oberland, Schloss Schadau is a romantic Gothic palace that feels like stepping into a movie set, or back in time over 100 years into a world elegance. The meadow overlooking the lake is a dream spot for heartfelt ceremonies, with the mountains in the background and the blue lake shimmering in the sunlight.
My couples love the sense of refinement and history here, and Thun itself is full of charm, with cafés, culture and stunning views at every turn.
2. Villa Honegg, Ennetbürgen, Lucerne
Perched high above Lake Lucerne, Villa Honegg is simply spectacular – just the drive from the lakeside up into the clouds is an amazing experience (well it was for me! I love the sheer power of nature!)
As you enter this five-star boutique and wellness retreat you can instantly relax – especially because your welcome is just so warm, natural and genuine care is taken over every details. Certainly it is a place where luxury meets tranquillity, and one of those places that truly takes your breath away.
The terraces open up to sweeping views of the Alps, and ceremonies in the garden area, or on the alpine meadow feel like something from a dream. Couples love that everything happens in one elegant space, from getting ready to celebrating, dining and dancing the night away. Boat trips, hiking, visiting the city and enjoying fabulous restaurants and wine are options for before and after your ceremony.
I have to say it is beautiful in all seasons, but as a “northerner” used to the colder climates, my winter Weddings and Elopements here have been so fun, and memorable!
3. Château Gütsch, Lucerne
A fairytale palace perched above the city, Château Gütsch brings a touch of old-world magic to every ceremony. The views over Lucerne and the lake below are extraordinary, but what I adore most is its atmosphere, graceful, intimate and full of charm.
One winter wedding in particular stays with me: the grand salon glowed with candlelight, Christmas decorations sparkled everywhere, and it felt as if we were in our own version of The Nutcracker! Wooden decorations of green, gold and red were flanked by fir trees and there were fairy lights everywhere.
My inner child was enchanted by this venue, and I know that my couple, S and J loved every minute too!
4. Oeschinensee Lake, Kandersteg, Switzerland
For couples who love the outdoors, have a sense of adventure and love surprises, Oeschinensee is pure enchantment. This alpine lake, ringed by dramatic peaks, is one of the most photographed in Switzerland, yet in the quieter months it feels deeply personal and untouched. Arriving at the lakeside on the small shuttle is such fun, with new views at every turn!
Standing by its turquoise waters as vows are exchanged, surrounded by mountains, I’m always reminded how breathtaking simplicity can be. Certainly for E and H and E and W, this will be a location they will always remember as the mountains witnessed their sacred vows.
5. Eibsee, German Alps
Eibsee has a magic all its own. Set at the base of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, this huge turquoise lake is surrounded by forest and the snow-capped peaks of the Wetterstein range. In autumn, it glows with rich colours, and in winter, it becomes a snowy fairytale scene.
It’s the perfect choice for couples who love to combine adventure with intimacy, a place where you can truly feel the stillness of nature. I have been here so many times in the past, in every season, and it really is perfection! Our natural landscapes are stunning and of course we must take care of them, so I tend to only advocate for small intimate weddings, or an elopement.
Afterwards you can take the cable car up Germany’s highest mountain, 2962 metres, and enjoy iced coffee or a hot chocolate on the top before going over to the glacier and even stepping over onto Austrian soil! Some of my couples have even climbed it – honestly that is amazing too!
6. Berlepsch Castle, Hesse, Germany
Steeped in history and overflowing with character, Berlepsch Castle is the kind of venue that makes you feel you’ve stepped into a storybook. Again, my theme seems to be fairytale and the magic of being in a place that is simply teeming with stories but also feels like we belong there. I have many many wonderful memories of weddings and elopements here, and am always excited to return.
With its turrets, four-poster beds and 19th-century Gothic chapel, it’s romantic and atmospheric. The chapel itself, when lit softly with candles and with a violinist or harpist playing you in to the space, feels deeply sacred, and afterwards, dining in the catacombs with local wine and regional cuisine is simply unforgettable.
For me, it is a place where history and romance walk hand in hand. The Castle hosts ceremonies in the Chapel and afterwards you can have appetisers on the terrace, and dine in one of the grand salons, or in the vaulted catacombs.
7. Schloss Kronberg, Taunus,Germany
Elegant, regal and surrounded by rolling countryside, Schloss Kronberg offers a sense of timeless sophistication. Once the dower house of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter after the death of her husband, Kaiser Friedrich III, it’s a venue rich in heritage.
I’ve held ceremonies in its graceful salons – the library is stunning – and wandering through corridors filled with art it looks almost untouched by modern life. It’s a place where you feel part of history yet completely at home, refined, intimate and full of quiet luxury.
8. Heidelberg Castle, Heidelberg, Germany
High above the historic city, Heidelberg Castle has a commanding presence and an unmistakable sense of romance. Its Gothic chapel, adorned with religious artworks, is magnificent, and the terraces offer sweeping views over the Neckar River, a dream for sunset photos.
I have visited the city many times as a tourist, and always seemed to see a wedding when I was there – making a quiet wish that one day I would be leading a ceremony there. It was my absolute luck and joy to work with R and C this year and make this quiet dream of mine a reality.
Beyond the ceremony, the area is alive with offerings of fine dining , wine tastings and river cruises. It’s a city that invites you to linger in its historic coffee houses, restaurants and riverside promenades, and a great stepping off point for more adventures!
9. Schloss Leopoldskron, Salzburg, Austria
This venue has an irresistible allure, as a beautiful rococo style palace which dates back to the mid 18th century. Famous for its role in The Sound of Music, Schloss Leopoldskron is a masterpiece of elegance and charm. The lakeside terrace, with mountains in the distance, creates an extraordinary setting for vows.
My recent wedding for H and R there felt almost cinematic, with H and R standing together in front of the gate where Maria stood, after her drenching! This is a truly awesome location for a ceremony, and although it was October, it was only just beginning to feel autumnal. Roses were still blooming and once the early morning mist cleared from the Untersberg mountain, we had the most amazing day!
10. Hotel Sacher, Salzburg, Austria
Classic, refined and full of Viennese charm, Hotel Sacher is a jewel in the heart of the city. Known worldwide as the place where the unique Sacher Torte was created, it’s also a wonderfully elegant wedding venue. Couples love its relaxed vibe, quiet luxury, impeccable service and central location overlooking the Danube.
There’s something timeless about it, a sense of occasion without pretence, where old-world glamour meets modern couples wish for a ceremony with meaning, in elegant surroundings that offer that touch of luxury, not withstanding a slice or two of that famous chocolate dessert which every Viennese coffee house will offer you!
Italy – My Dreams Coming True Working There
Italy has always called to me- for over 40 years I have visited so many times as a tourist, but officiating weddings there feels like a dream fulfilled. The light, the language, the food, the warmth of the people, everything feels designed for romance. These two venues capture that spirit perfectly.
Villa Cetinale, Siena, Tuscany
Tucked among the rolling hills of Tuscany, Villa Cetinale is pure Italian elegance. Its gardens, Cypress trees that stand like sentinals to protect it, create a setting that’s both majestic and welcoming. S and B held their ceremony outside in the long garden and watching S walk towards B on the arm of her proud father is something I will always remember and B’s face lighting up with love!
S and B chose this area for its simple beauty, and the Villa for its exclusive use so all guests could gather over the weekend celebrations, beginning with a pre ceremomy welcome dinner and finishing off with breakfast the day after. The firework display at their First Dance was amazing!
Although it was nearly mid October, it was still warm enough to hold all the celebrations outdoors. I loved the long tables set outdoors for dinner, the scent of hydrangeas and white roses which decorated the setting, and was proud to be a part of their eveninng too, acting as MC for their Speeches, Cake Cutting, and then their Father/Daughter, Mother/Groom dances, and finally their First Dance as a married couple!
It really was a dream come true for this Celebrant!
Villa Pizzo, Lake Como, Italy
And then there is Villa Pizzo, a lakeside haven of sophistication and serenity. Arriving by boat feels like stepping into another world. B and B had the most amazing wedding here!
The flower-filled terraces, the glittering lake, the graceful architecture, it’s utterly captivating. Ceremonies on the lakeside terrace are unforgettable, with the sound of water lapping gently below and the soft hum of celebration in the air. Every moment feels cinematic, intimate and deeply special.
Each of these venues holds a piece of my heart. They’re not just stunning places to say “I do,” but spaces that inspire emotion, connection and wonder.
Whether in the Alps, beside a tranquil lake or under the Tuscan landscape, I feel endlessly grateful to stand beside couples as they promise their futures to each other.
These are the moments that remind me why I love what I do, and that I am delighted to hear from couples who are looking for their special day in Switzerland, Austria, Germany or Northern Italy. As a bilingual Celebrant I can of course offer ceremonies in English and German, and have a smattering of Italian too!
