Working with a couple recently on their elopement got me thinking. As an independent celebrant I do feel I have a unique advantage—one that mean including religious content and the blending of faith and spiritual values into a ceremony is another way of “personalising” a couple’s ceremony. However, when discussing this with them, I do make it clear, that I have a distinct role, and am not standing in place of their religious or spiritual leader. Instead, I’ve been asked and entrusted with the special task of adding a touch of religious meaning, always based on their advice and input, and often simply just enough to acknowledge and celebrate the diverse faiths and values that each couple brings to their union.
The Magic of a personalised Ceremony:
Every couple I work with has a distinct love story, and personalisation is at the heart of what I do. It’s not just about customizing vows or choosing a unique venue; it’s about infusing the ceremony with elements that hold profound meaning for the couple and make the ceremony, a ritual of itself, truly special and meaningful. Recently, I had the joy of bringing together a couple whose journey was a beautiful blend of cultures, each bringing its own set of traditions and rituals, and I have to say it is an even deeper honour for me, as a secular individual, to be able to learn more about my couple in this way, and to give them respect and dignity.
Embracing religion and spirituality:
To be honest, not that many couples approach me with a desire to incorporate religious or spiritual aspects into their ceremonies but for some it could be a way of maintaining a sense of tradition, while for others, it’s a deeply rooted aspect of their identity. The key lies in respecting and understanding the significance of these elements. A couple, both deeply connected to their faiths, may want to infuse their ceremony with rituals that celebratetheir individual spiritual journeys, and for this I am always ready to listen, research, and learn.

Inclusivity that goes a step further :
The beauty of personalised ceremonies lies in their ability to be inclusive, because love knows no boundaries and it is essential for me both as a Celebrant and as a human being who believes in offering choice, without judgement, to create spaces that honor diverse backgrounds and beliefs. My role is to facilitate a ceremony that not only respects but celebrates these differences. Whether it’s blending Hindu and Christian rituals or incorporating prayers from different faiths, and it really has been deeply satisfying to be able to offer this.
Authenticity in every word:
The magic of a personalized ceremony is in its authenticity. The words I have created in a spoken script, the rituals that have been agreed, and which are performed by the couple themselves, or accompanied by their family or special guests, – every element is a reflection of the couple’s journey. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a couple who were passionate about environmental sustainability. We incorporated eco-friendly rituals, like planting an acorn together at the ceremony, and when they got back home to the USA, they planted the actual tree.
The Impact on those present :
The result of these personalised ceremonies is a profound and moving experience for both the couple and their guests. There’s an energy in the air around us that is almost tangible, with the sense too that every ritual performed is deeply meaningful. It goes beyond a mere ceremony; it becomes a shared moment of connection and understanding, and this means as much to me too because these are the moments I am holding space for their light, their love, and their unique story.
In a world that is becoming less physically connected because of technology, the need for sharing rituals with each other in an inclusive and personalised ceremony is more vital than ever. We want to connect, not simply through screens and media but through touch and time spent with each other.

Love is a universal language, and a well-crafted ceremony speaks to the hearts of all present, regardless of background or belief. As a Wedding Celebrant, my mission is to create ceremonies that not only tell the unique love story of a couple but also resonate with the diversity that is found in and of our connection to each other as humans.
So, here’s to crafting ceremonies that are warm, inclusive, and reflective of the rich tapestry of love in all its forms.
